For the many photographers with their eyes on Nikon’s full-frame D3, but who would prefer less bulk and expense, Nikon has introduced the D700. The new D-SLR shares many of the top-of-the-line D3’s fine features, but in a smaller, lighter (yet still rugged) body and at a much lower price. The D700 even adds a few features not present in the D3, like a pop-up Speedlight flash unit and a sensor-dust reduction system.

Like the D3, the D700 features Nikon’s EXPEED image-processing concept, which improves image quality, operating speed (0.12-second startup, 40ms shutter lag like the D3, fastest for a D-SLR) and battery life (1,000 shots per charge, via CIPA criteria). Your choice of 12- or 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit internal processing further adds to the quality and speed. | User-Applied Firmware Updates
D3 and D700 users will be able to download firmware upgrades onto the flash media card and upload it when the flash is mounted on the camera. |
