Today’s digital SLR is probably the best camera type for most photographers, offering the widest variety of features, the quickest autofocusing and burst-shooting performance, and the greatest array of interchangeable lenses, along with excellent image quality, easy portability and affordability.

But the biggest advantage of the D-SLR is that it’s part of a whole photographic system. A D-SLR system isn’t just a few camera bodies and some pieces that attach to them. All the parts of the system have been designed to function together very effectively, providing you with just what you need to produce better photos more easily. Metering systems utilize distance data from the lenses, flash systems zoom to match lens focal length, and camera bodies and flash units function together even when not connected by cables. The cameras’ image sensors, A/D converters, image-processing engines and RAW/JPEG algorithms work with the lenses and flash units to maximize image quality. When you buy a D-SLR, you’re buying into a whole photographic environment, not just a camera body. So consider the whole system, not just the camera body, when you’re choosing a D-SLR.
